Shillong, Oct 11 : In a stride towards advancing projects related to solid waste management, Pyniaid Sing Syiem, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), along with delegates from the World Bank, visited the Office of the Hima Mylliem at Mawkhar, Shillong, on Wednesday.
The primary purpose of this visit was to engage in discussions concerning the KHAD (Solid Waste Management) with the Syiem of Hima Mylliem, Paiem Ainam Manik Syiem, focusing on the Council’s initiative to address the issue of solid waste management in the five districts under its jurisdiction and also the cleaning of Ïewduh, which falls under the jurisdiction of Hima Mylliem.
The delegation from the World Bank was welcomed by the Syiem of Hima Mylliem, Paiem Ainam Manik Syiem, along with Dalois and Mintris.
It is worth mentioning that the KHADC sought assistance from the World Bank as it lacks sufficient resources or financial support from the Centre or the state government to tackle the growing challenge of solid waste management.
The Executive Committee of the KHADC established a Solid Waste Management Cell (SWMC) for the facilitation, execution, and oversight of the Act and Rules. It will also formulate policies, guidelines, norms, standards, and orders for the effective implementation of solid waste management across the council’s jurisdiction. Additionally, it will ensure provisions for the establishment of centres for the collection, segregation, and storage of segregated waste. The SWMC will also encourage the formation of self-help groups to provide training on solid waste management and engage communities in waste management at the community level to maintain hygienic conditions.
As part of this initiative, on September 13, CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem handed over a garbage truck for the collection of garbage from Iewduh Market. He explained that they decided to hand Market this garbage truck to the office of the Syiem of Mylliem due to their concern for the cleanliness of Iewduh market.
