Shillong, Sept 19: Meghalaya’s senior female legislator, Ampareen Lyngdoh, expressed her excitement over the Union cabinet passing the Women’s Reservation Bill, which will reserve 33% of the seats for women in the Lok Sabha as well as assembly legislative seats.

“I’m very delighted and this is a jubilant day for women of the country and I look forward to it becoming a law. I hope to see Assemblies giving a fairer chance to women to participate actively in politics,” mentioned Lyngdoh.

She emphasised that it is not as if there have never been women candidates that have won in Meghalaya, but the fact that women candidates have a tough fight against their main contenders in given situations means that when a seat is reserved exclusively for women, it would be the best way to give women the recognition they deserve.

Lyngdoh added that there will not be a quest over a dearth of candidates in Meghalaya. “We are women who are very active in all spheres of work. So look forward to the implementation of the bill, and unfortunately, some men will have to give way to women, and that will be the best thing we can do for this nation and country,” added the NPP MLA.
