Shillong, Aug 7: In a devastating incident on Sunday evening, three people lost their lives and two others sustained injuries when a truck carrying cattle plunged into a deep gorge near Lad Mawkhap on the Shillong-Dawki National Highway 40.

The unfortunate accident occurred as the truck, with registration number ML 05 G 9528, was en route from Pynursla to Laitlyngkot. According to the police, the driver lost control of the vehicle due to a brake failure while navigating the narrow and hilly stretch of NH-40.

The tragic incident remained concealed until one of the survivors managed to crawl out of the gorge and reached the highway seeking assistance, police added.

The Shillong-Pynursla highway has been grappling with numerous landslides over the past few months, making the drive on this narrow stretch highly hazardous. Accidents and landslides have become a common occurrence on this route, often resulting in severe consequences like this tragic incident.
