Shillong, July 19: The Khliehriat Circle of the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) on Wednesday smeared black paint on the name plate of civil hospital as a mark of protest against the government’s failure to equip the hospital at Khliehriat with necessary requirements to provide quality healthcare to the people of the region.
The action was taken after a delegation led by the president of the union Livingeon Sama and general secretary Ajoymenson Lyngdoh met the District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) and medical officer to enquire about the functioning of the hospital which was recently upgraded from a community health centre (CHC) to a civil hospital.
The statement issued by the union said that on conducting inspection, they found out that the upgradation of the hospital was just for namesake since it lacks proper equipment and infrastructure to deliver quality healthcare services to the people.
The union also slammed the government for neglecting the East Jaintia Hills District even after 12 years of its creation.
“In view of this, we have decided to erase the name civil hospital till the government takes necessary measures to address the problems faced by the hospital,” the statement said.
