Assam: 133 individuals seek refuge in Dhubri District after violence in West Bengal

Guwahati, July 11: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday informed that around 133 individuals who feared for their lives due to violence in the panchayat election in West Bengal had sought refuge in Assam’s Dhubri District.

On Tuesday, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Tweeted, “Yesterday, 133 individuals who feared for their lives due to violence in the panchayat election in West Bengal sought refuge in Dhubri District of Assam. We have provided them with shelter in a relief camp, as well as food and medical assistance.”

In the West Bengal Panchayat Election violence around 20 people lost their lives.

The West Bengal panchayat election was held on Saturday amid widespread violence, resulting in destruction of ballot papers after looting the ballot boxes and also death of political workers.

Till Sunday, 17 people were killed in election-related violence in Bengal.

On Monday TMC worker Maidul Sheikh succumbed to injuries at NRS Medical College and Hospital. He was severely injured during a clash between TMC and Congress workers at Raghunathganj in Murshidabad district on Saturday.

On Monday fresh polling was held in nearly 700 polling booths across 19 districts of the state.

State Election Commissioner Rajiva Sinha on Monday after arriving at the SEC office said, “So far, repolling is being held peacefully.”
