Shillong, March 10: Meghalaya Police is on the hunt for two suspects involved in the gruesome murder of Omeka Myrthong, whose mutilated body was found at Umiam Lake on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, DIG (Eastern Range) Meghalaya, Davis N R Marak informed that the victim was last seen with two of his friends. The DIG also informed that the two suspects were still absconding.

DIG Marak informed that the parts of the body were initially found at Umiam Lake and the police registered it as an “unnatural death” since the cause of death was not ascertainable. However, on Thursday, the post-mortem was carried out at Umiam and in the preliminary investigation, the police discovered that a missing report was filed on March 3 regarding the victim, filed at Lumdiengjri PS.

“This person was supposedly missing from the 26th of February, but the missing report was filed on March 3rd,” informed the DIG.

It was during the follow-up of the report that the police from Lumdiengjri PS found out that the victim was last seen with two of his friends, who were “maybe” drunk, informed DIG Marak.

The DIG further informed that after learning about the case, a ‘Zero FIR’ was later filed at Umiam PS. A zero FIR can be filed in any police station, regardless of whether the offence was committed under the jurisdiction of that particular police station.

After filing the Zero FIR at Umiam PS, the case was transferred to Lumdiengjri PS, and an investigation is ongoing to find the two absconding suspects.

Notably, on Monday, i.e., March 6, a decapitated body was found at Umiam Lake, and two days later, villagers found a hand floating on the lake. Later on the same day, the remaining body parts believed to be of the same person were unearthed near the Umiam Lake.
