Shillong, March 10: The Director General of Police (DGP), Dr LR Bishnoi, informed on Friday that a total of 16 cases were registered and 69 people were arrested during the recently held Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election. DGP Bishnoi further informed that 13 cases were related to pre-poll problems and 3 cases were registered after the polls. He also stated that 56 people were arrested during the pre-poll period and 13 were arrested post-polling.

“By and large, the election went peacefully, but a number of arrests were made. The seizure was very good and has broken all the earlier 50-year records. The total seizures were nearly 76-77 crores, which is eight times higher than the seizures of earlier years,” informed the DGP.

During the election period, the police had seized nearly Rs. 3.06 crores cash, Rs. 1.95 crores worth of liquor, Rs. 12 crores worth of drugs, Rs. 30 lakh Gold, and Rs. 30 lakh worth of freebies. It should be mentioned that Meghalaya tops the list of seizures among the three northeastern states – Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura – that went to polls recently.

The DIG further shared that the State Police have recovered narcotics on a large scale during the last six months and has broken the record of the last 50 years since attaining Statehood. Emphasizing that drug traffickers continue with the same practices after getting bail, DGP Bishnoi said the decision was taken to implement PITNDPS Act 1985, which has a provision of preventive detention.

“We have submitted 10 proposals to the government, which are currently under consideration. An advisory board has been instituted, and once approval has been given, repeat offenders can be detained and sent to jail even if there is no recovery,” he added.

Furthermore, he stated that it is the duty of each and every citizen of the state to break the deadly chain between suppliers and consumers.
