Shillong, March 9: The first cabinet session of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA)-II on Thursday decided to repeal the ordinance of the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021.

Speaking to reporters after the Cabinet Meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that as the session is on, the government is going to put it in the form of a bill and the Meghalaya Regulation Gaming act will be repealed.

“…. when session is not on to enforce a particular act, an ordinance is passed by the cabinet, which then has to be brought in terms of a bill and ratified by the house and passed and that’s what’s happening now,” informed the Chief Minister.

“So the ordinance was cleared earlier, but now that the session is on, this is the correct platform now to regularise the repealing of the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021,” added the CM.

Following bitter opposition from different quarters, the Meghalaya government on October 13, 2022 have come up with an ordinance to repeal the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021 which allowed setting up of casinos in the state.

The Department of Taxation had introduced the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021 for the regulations of gaming in the state.
