7 villages infected with LSD in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 30: Seven villages have been declared as ‘infected villages’ of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle.

Secretary in-charge Animal Husbandry & Veterinary department on Tuesday informed that the villages of Sumer, Mawlyngkhung, Umpyrdong-Umden, Umkon-Umden, Saiden-Nongpoh and Jyntru-Nongpoh under Umsning C&RD Block in Ri-Bhoi District and Rangthong under Mawkyrwat C&RD Block in South West Khasi Hills District as ‘infected villages’ of LSD in cattle with a view to prevent and control the scheduled disease.

This was based on the test result samples dated May 28 regarding confirmation of LSD in Meghalaya by the National Institute of High Security Animal Disease (NIHSAD) Bhopal vide letter dated May 12.

There also have been reports of about death of about 20 cows in last one month due to an unknown disease in the nearby areas of Pynthormukhrah area where there are cow shelters, possible due to the LSD.

This disease is an infectious disease caused by a virus. This disease is found in cattle and fish. The transmission / spread / spread of this disease is caused by the bite of flies, ticks and mosquitoes in animals.

Animals infected with this disease develop mild fever. Nodules/ lumps emerge from place to place on the whole body. The mortality rate of animals suffering from this disease is estimated to be 1 to 5 percent.
