Shillong, July 12: Chimneys of two coke plants were demolished by the East Jaintia Hills district administration on Wednesday after they were constructed without having consent to establish (CTE) from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB).

The demolition was taken up under the supervision of additional deputy commissioner J Shylla.

The team had representatives from the office of Superintendent of Police, East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, and District Commerce and Industries Centre.

The two coke plants which were demolished include M/S Halari Coke Plant and M/S Shauryansi Coke which were under Sutnga elaka.

“The exercise was carried out in pursuance to this Office Order dated July 7 and July 11. These orders were issued recently by the office of the undersigned as there was a likelihood that these illegal under-construction factories might attempt to operate clandestinely using locally sourced coal and thus facilitating illegal coal mining within the district,” Deputy Commissioner A. Baranwal said on Wednesday.

He said that the demolition was carried out by blasting through explosives.

While M/S Halari Coke Plant was demolished at around 12: 00 PM, M/S Shauransi Coke was demolished at around 3:30PM. All safety precautions were observed during the process and no injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, the deputy commissioner informed that the demolition exercise will continue over the next few weeks against all illegally constructed Coke Plants within the district.
