Aizawl, Jan 29: The Zo-Reunification Organization (ZORO) staged protests against the state government’s order to abolish the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and implement border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border.

The demonstrations were held in Aizawl and other district capitals, including Champhai, Lunglei, Kolasib, and Serchhip, as well as in Mimbung, Vaphai, and other parts of Manipur, such as Tengnoupal and Chandel.

ZORO Vice President Rohmingthanga Kawlni criticized the central government’s decision to revoke the FMR, which had allowed visa-free movement for people residing within 16 km of the border.

He also condemned the state government for supporting the move. ZORO General Secretary L. Ramdinliana Renthlei further emphasized that the decision had angered the people of Mizoram and Zo ethnic tribes across the border, leading to strong opposition from ZORO, NGOs, and political parties.

The Mizoram State Legislative Assembly had previously passed a unanimous resolution rejecting the central government’s plan.

Renthlei warned that if the policy is enforced without public consent, ZORO would not be responsible for any consequences. He reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to resisting the removal of FMR and border fencing, calling on citizens to support their cause.

ZORO had earlier urged the central government to withdraw the order and reinstate the FMR. The organization also criticized the replacement of FMR with a border pass system requiring residents within 10 km of the border to apply for special permits.
