Tura, June 22: In a sudden onslaught of nature’s fury, a powerful thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and thunder wreaked havoc in Garo Hills on Thursday, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Beginning at 5 AM, the relentless storm unleashed its fury, resulting in landslides and significant damage to property across the region.

One of the most devastating incidents occurred at the renowned PA Sangma Stadium in Tura, where the heavy shower triggered a landslide, in which a major section of the structure collapsed. The collapse sent tonnes of soil from the main field cascading down, inundating the road adjacent to the former Coal India Limited complex.

Local authorities and emergency response teams rushed to the affected areas in a bid to assess the situation and provide assistance to the affected residents. Reports of damaged homes, fallen trees, and blocked roads poured in as the extent of the destruction became apparent.

The PA Sangma stadium, a symbol of regional pride, has served as a venue for numerous sporting events and cultural activities.

Efforts are underway to clear the debris and reopen affected roads, ensuring that normalcy can be restored as soon as possible.

More details are awaited.

Meanwhile, the authorities have advised citizens to remain vigilant as the weather situation remains unpredictable. Meteorological agencies are closely monitoring the region and issuing regular updates to ensure the safety of the population.
