SHILLONG, JUN 22: The Meghalaya Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) busted a drug deal in the Lumsurvey area on Monday and arrested two alleged traffickers, seizing suspected heroin and drug paraphernalia, police said.

Based on credible intelligence inputs, ANTF personnel laid an ambush in Lumsurvey and apprehended the two accused during the operation conducted on June 22.

A search conducted as per NDPS Act provisions led to the recovery of one plastic soap box containing suspected heroin weighing 16.1 grams, 47 colourful vials also suspected to contain heroin, and one mobile phone.

The arrested persons have been identified as Sabina Begum (21) wife of Omega Ali and a resident of Lumsurvey, Shillong, with permanent residence at 5th Mile, Samdhara, PS Sonitpur, Tezpur, Assam; and Viru Singh (40) son of late Taru Singh, resident of Punjabi Line, Bara Bazar, opposite BK Sons Bakery, Shillong.

A case has been registered at Sadar Police Station, Shillong under the NDPS Act.

Police suspect both accused are part of a larger organised crime syndicate operating in Shillong and involved in the local drug peddling network.

“The ANTF is conducting further investigation to establish both forward and backward linkages,” Superintendent of Police (SP) of ANTF Vikash Kumar said in a statement.

ANTF data shows Lumsurvey has emerged as a hotspot for narcotics trafficking this year.

So far in 2026, three cases relating to contraband trafficking from the Lumsurvey area have been registered under the NDPS Act, leading to the arrest of seven persons, majority of whom have domicile in Assam.

A significant quantity of heroin, along with a large number of empty vials and syringes, have been recovered and seized in these operations.

ANTF is maintaining strict surveillance over illegal activities in the Lumsurvey area and remains committed to taking stringent action against individuals involved in drug trafficking and other narcotics-related offences, the SP stated.
