Tura, July 25: TMC leader Richard Marak has been arrested by Tura Police in connection with the violence in Tura on Monday night.

Vested interest groups gheraoed and pelted stones at CM’s Secretariat on Monday evening when the Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma was having a peaceful meeting with NGOs and pressure groups that were on indefinite hunger strike.

Since the violence started, police have arrested 19 people based on video footage and eye witness accounts for inciting the unruly mob.

Before joining TMC, Richard was the Youth Congress Chief of Meghalaya.

He has been arrested for complicity in Monday violence where mobs allegedly led by TMC goons attacked police and civilians alike while talks were going on inside CM’s secretariat office in Tura resulting in injuries to scores of people and torching of vehicles and destruction of public property.

He is accused of hatching a conspiracy to derail the talks and create trouble.

Richard Marak is a close aide of former chief minister and TMC leader Dr. Mukul Sangma.

Richard unsuccessfully contested against Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma from South Tura constituency in the 2023 assembly elections.
