Tura, June 26: An investigation has been launched by West Garo Hills police, after Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani called for a probe into a video clipping that reveals a young woman being subjected to a public flogging in a medieval style of punishment in a village somewhere in Garo Hills.
The men of the village rain blows mercilessly on the woman, pulling her hair violently, assaulting her continuously with bamboo sticks onto her back, shocking no remorse or sympathy even as she cries and begs for the beating to stop.
The animal in a human comes out even in the womenfolk of the village who witness the attack and encourage the men to continue the assault on the girl.
Only an elderly man tries to come in between the attackers and the victim trying to stop the beating, but he is pushed aside.
Such cases are rare in modern society and is mostly witnessed in failed states like Afghanistan and Pakistan where the authorities conduct kangaroo courts in full public view and provide harsh punishment even for petty crimes like theft or minor violations.
