Agartala, Jan 11: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday held discussions with senior Indian Army officials on India–Bangladesh border-related issues and emerging security implications.

The discussions are important as they come ahead of the upcoming elections in neighbouring Bangladesh.

The meeting included the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Red Shield Division, Major General Shubankar Basu, along with other senior officers.

The discussions focused on recent developments along the India–Bangladesh border, concerns over porous stretches, potential inimical activities, and the security implications of Bangladesh’s elections scheduled for next month.

Major General Basu shared his assessment of the situation and assured continued vigilance and close cooperation. He also expressed gratitude for the consistent support extended by the Tripura government to the Indian Army.

The GOC said efforts would be made to further strengthen civil–military cooperation through enhanced intelligence sharing and outreach initiatives, including motivational lectures at academic institutions, recruitment rallies, and Agniveer coaching programmes.

Chief Minister Saha reiterated the state government’s full support and willingness to cooperate with the Army in all its endeavours.

Officials said the visit underscored the Red Shield Division’s strong bond with the people of Tripura and its unwavering commitment to safeguarding national integrity while honouring the legacy of India’s war heroes.

The division played a pivotal role during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, including the decisive Battle of Gangasagar near Agartala, where its troops displayed exceptional valour and professionalism.

Saturday’s interaction marked Major General Basu’s maiden visit to Agartala after assuming command of the division. As part of the visit, he paid homage at the historic Albert Ekka War Memorial, laying a wreath in tribute to Lance Naik Albert Ekka and other soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation.
