Shillong, Aug 16: Dismissing any notion of a link between tourism and the Inner Line Permit (ILP), Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma emphasised the distinct nature of these two subjects while addressing concerns about illegal immigration in the state.
“Let’s refrain from intertwining tourism and ILP. They are distinct matters. Undoubtedly, ILP is affected by certain aspects of tourism, requiring specific permissions. However, it’s crucial to recognize that these realms need not be conflated. Tourism stands as a vital revenue source and job provider for the state. Our commitment to enhancing tourism infrastructure remains unwavering, and we will persist in our diligent efforts toward that objective,” remarked CM Sangma.
Despite asserting the separation of these subjects, CM Sangma highlighted that various mechanisms exist to address and deter illegal immigration. “ILP aligns with policies implemented in other parts of the nation; taking inspiration from this, we have passed a resolution,” he conveyed.
Further underlining the government’s actions, the Chief Minister pointed to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), enacted alongside the ILP. “Beyond ILP, we have also introduced the MRSSA act, endorsed during the Governor’s tenure. We are actively pursuing multiple avenues to achieve the ultimate goal of curbing illegal immigration. The solution resides with the Government of India. We have consistently exerted pressure on the central government to devise strategies for addressing this issue, whether through MRSSA or ILP,” he further added.
