SWGH Police cautions motorists against over-speeding, emphasizes on use of helmet & seat belt

Tura, Dec 23: In view of the onset of winter, which bring with it heavy fog, the South West Garo Hills (SWGH) police have cautioned motorists to avoid over-speeding driving and advised the pillion rider to wear helmet.

In an advisory issued on Friday, Superintendent of SWGH, Vikash Kumar, said the winter season usually sees heavy fog along the State Highway (SH)-12 i.e road from Tura onwards to Purakhasia and State highway (SH)-6 i.e. road from Garodoba towards Monabari-Mankachar due to which frequent road accidents are witnessed leading to damage of vehicles, properties, injuries to person(s) and sometimes loss of innocent lives.

In order to avoid such accidents, he cautioned all drivers and riders to refrain from over-speeding and reckless driving and riding.

He said the District Police is contemplating to make wearing of helmets for both riders as well as pillion riders, fastening of seat belts for drivers as well as co-drivers mandatory as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act. He also advised them to avoid or refrain from driving or riding after consuming alcohol (drunken driving) or other intoxicating drinks.

“The riders/ pillion riders are hereby advised to procure and wear helmets which fulfill safety norms such as ISI mark quality,” he said.

He further announced that Ampati Police will be setting up naka points and carry out checking of vehicles, vehicle documents, driving license, wearing of seatbelts, wearing of helmets for both rider and pillion rider, triple ridding, overloading in passenger vehicles, etc within the jurisdiction of South West Garo Hills District and violators will be penalized as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

“In our effort towards safety of road users, to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities, Ampati Police would like to appeal to the general public to kindly cooperate and bear with us while such checks are being carried out,” he appealed.
