Tura, Jan 31: A combing operation launched in the forests of Bolkinggre in East Garo Hills, across Simsang river, following sightings of a parachute descending from the sky with a suspicious item has turned out to be a weather instrument.

The police anti insurgency operation camp at Bolkinggre were alerted on January 30th at around 09:00pm that a suspicious object or device had been found at Asiragre village
under Williamnagar PS.

A police team including bomb disposal personnel were dispatched to the site.

The area was once a hot bed for militant activity and recovery of multiple explosive devices and other weapons.

During enquiry, it was learnt that on the 29th January, 2024 at around 06:30
pm, one villager Silnang R. Marak of Asiragre village, PO/PS
Williamnagar, East Garo Hills District, Meghalaya found one device “meteomodem PS-20 made in France” with a red colour parachute attached to it in his garden which was kept in his house.

The PS-20 item was seized and inspected and later identified to be a GPS sonde dedicated for the measurement of wind currents in the atmosphere.

East Garo Hills police has urged villagers not to panic following the discovery of the object.
