Shillong, Aug 25: The Meghalaya State Planning Board (MSPB) is preparing to submit comprehensive recommendations to the state government for widening existing roads, construction new road and other measures to resolving the Shillong city’s traffic woes.
This was informed by the chairman of the board Metbah Lyngdoh after conducting inspections to several locations in the city on Monday. He was also accompanied by headmen of Lumbatngen, Sawlad and Lapalang.
Speaking to media persons, Lyngdoh said that the board has initiated efforts to address the growing concern of traffic congestion in Shillong.
“We will soon submit a report to strongly recommend the state government to take steps for widening of existing roads and construction of new roads to solve this problem of traffic congestion,” he added.
Lyngdoh informed that during the inspection, the board has identified the Saw Lad junction to Lapalang and Lumbatngen as well as road near the Assam Regiment as critical areas for improvement, with plans to widen existing roads and construct new ones to alleviate congestion.
“The board has noticed that there is defence land and those belonging to private land owners. We have decided to examine this matter and put up our strong recommendation to the state government (for exploring the possibility of acquiring land for widening of these roads,” the chairman said while emphasizing the need for support and cooperation from all concerned parties to effectively tackle traffic congestion.
Lyngdoh further informed that the board has also identified the Umpling-Dongsharum road. This is another road which is crucial for reducing traffic congestion in the Rynjah area, as it will connect to important junctions from MESto Demseiniong and from Rynjah market to Nongrim Hills.
“We will examine this after discussion with the PWD and accordingly submit our recommendations to the state government,” he said.
According to him, Shillong’s traffic congestion has been a longstanding concern, with the city’s narrow roads and increasing vehicular load contributing to the problem leading to people stranded in traffic jams for long hours.
The board has also inspected other roads, which may to a great extent help in addressing the traffic congestion in Shillong.
