State Govt approves ₹936 Cr for Tura & New Shillong water projects

Shillong, March 7: PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak on Friday informed the Assembly that the Greater Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme is designed to meet the water demand of 30 million litres per day (MLD) by 2055 and New Shillong Water Supply Scheme (Phase-I) for 70 MLD by 2057.

Replying to a cut motion in the Assembly Marak said the Greater Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme was accorded administrative approval on January 31, 2025 for an amount of Rs 398.48 crore.

The scheme is a pumping scheme and the source of water supply is the Ganol river having a dry weather discharge of 195.42 MLD based on flow measurement, he said adding that “the scheme is designed to cater to the ultimate population of 2,69,763 and the ultimate water demand of 30 MLD in the year 2055 which shall benefit the entire population of Tura town including all the institutions being setup in and around Tura.”

He said that the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme (Phase-I) was accorded administrative approval on March 15, 2024 at Rs 538.44 crore under the State Plan.

The Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) contract was awarded to M/s BAC Infratech Private Limited on June 26, 2024 through an open tender and the scheduled time of completion is 2 years.

The source of supply is the river Umkhen having dry weather discharge of 123.16 Mld. The project is designed to cater potable water supply to New Shillong Township and adjoining 32 villages.

“It shall supply water to an ultimate population of 4.14 lakh with the ultimate supply of water@70 million MLD by the year 2057 that is after 30 years,” the minister informed.
