Shillong, Sept 9: Social Welfare Minister, Paul Lyngdoh, on Monday defended appointment of former Lok Sabha Member, Agatha Sangma, as the chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR).

Addressing the media, Lyngdoh said, “These allegations will always arise, whether we appoint A, B, or C. The important thing, as I’ve shared with you before, is that we had already approached and identified an individual whom we recommended as Chairperson of the Child Rights Commission. Unfortunately, that individual declined the offer, which caused a delay in the appointment process.”

Lyngdoh further explained that Agatha Sangma’s name was proposed during a cabinet meeting last Friday, after thorough due diligence was carried out. “We considered her experience in Parliament, her educational qualifications, and her extensive public service background. These were the key factors that validated her appointment as chairperson.”

It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya State Trinamool Congress (TMC), criticized Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Sunday, accusing him of misusing Meghalaya’s resources for personal gain. The criticism came in response to Agatha Sangma’s appointment, as she is Chief Minister’s sister. The TMC asked the Chief Minister to prioritize the interests of the people of Meghalaya over personal matters, urging him to shift focus from personal interests to serving the public effectively.
