Shillong, Feb 17: The recent Ed Sheeran concert has placed Shillong firmly on the global music tourism map, reinforcing its reputation as India’s premier “Music City.” Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh underscored the event’s broader significance, highlighting how music-driven tourism is reshaping Meghalaya’s travel landscape.

“Ed Sheeran is ranked number two in the world today, and the fact that he openly acknowledged this as the biggest and best concert he has attended in India is proof that Shillong possesses the natural DNA of a world-class music destination,” Lyngdoh stated.

While concerts in Shillong and Umiam continue to attract international stars, Lyngdoh emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding tourism infrastructure across the state. “We are steadily enhancing connectivity to remote areas, increasing homestay availability, and improving supporting infrastructure. Every musician who has performed here has chosen locations with well-maintained facilities, and we aim to extend these benefits statewide.”

The Minister reflected on Meghalaya’s pioneering role in music tourism. “Long before the term ‘concert economy’ was coined, we started integrating music with tourism back in 2004. Today, Shillong is a must-visit destination for artists and event organizers. This is a defining moment for our tourism and music industries.”

Discussing the economic impact, Lyngdoh estimated that the concert drew between 30,000 and 35,000 attendees, with ripple effects across the hospitality sector. “Hoteliers and homestay owners are thrilled. For the first time, we saw an influx of visitors during what is traditionally a lean period for tourism.”

Beyond single-event tourism, the government is strategizing ways to extend visitor stays. “Our survey revealed that many tourists stayed on for Mr Big’s performance the following day and explored destinations like Sohra, Dawki, and Umiam. With over ₹4,000 crore being invested in Meghalaya’s tourism sector, we expect a major transformation within the next two years.”

Looking ahead, Lyngdoh highlighted infrastructure developments aimed at sustaining Shillong’s momentum as a global music hub. “The Ropeway project is underway, and we are linking multiple tourist circuits to encourage deeper exploration. We are also expanding our tourism calendar to spotlight newly discovered destinations, ensuring visitors experience the diverse offerings of Meghalaya.”

With strategic investments and an ever-growing reputation as a cultural hotspot, Shillong is not just hosting concerts—it is setting the stage for a new era of music-led tourism in India.
