Shillong, Sept 16: The state government will soon take a call on the proposal to enhance the salary of over 12,541 SSA teachers in the state.

An official, under the case of anonymity, said the government will discuss and take a call on the matter in a meeting to be held this week.

The SSA teachers under the banner of the All Meghalaya SSA School Teachers’ Association (AMSSASTA) and the All Garo Hills SSA School Teachers’ Association (AGHSSASTA) had served an ultimatum to the state government to consider enhancing salary of SSA teachers in Meghalaya by September 30, failing which they would be compelled to launch an indefinite state-wide protest.

“Till date we have not gotten any response from the government in this crucial matter and it’s been eight long years since the government enhanced the salary of the SSA teachers. Being aware of the present price rise scenario, we strongly demand that our salary be once again enhanced at the earliest with not less than 100 percent hike and based on revised pay structure of the state government,” the two associations had stated in a letter to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on September 12.

“Therefore, as per the resolution taken by the CEC meeting of AMSSASTA and AGHSSASTA on September 7, at Mt Hermon Higher Secondary School Nongstoin, we demand that the government should immediately enhance the salary of SSA teachers in Meghalaya by September 30,” they had stated and warned that if the demand is not met by September 30, they will launch a state-wide indefinite demonstration at the state capital.

On the other hand, another group of SSA teachers under the banner of the Meghalaya SSA Schools Association (MSSASA) has decided to take a call on the state government’s decision to put on hold the proposal for enhancing the salary of over 12,541 SSA teachers in its general executive council (GEC) meeting on September 21.
