Second Meghalaya student dies in Karnataka food poisoning case

Shillong, March 18: A second student from Meghalaya has died following a suspected food poisoning incident at a residential school in Malavalli, Karnataka.

The student is from Nongstoiñ; however, this has not been confirmed by officials yet.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma confirmed the tragic news on Tuesday through a post on X, “Pained to learn about the passing of another young boy from Meghalaya in Karnataka. My deepest condolences to the family,” the Chief Minister wrote.

The incident, which occurred at Gokul Educational Institution’s residential school in T. Kagepura Village, Mandya District, Karnataka, has now claimed two lives. The first victim, Khrehlang Khongtani, a Class VII student, passed away on Sunday.

A total of 23 students from Meghalaya were residing in the hostel where the food poisoning occurred. Following the incident, all affected students were immediately hospitalized by the district administration.

The Meghalaya government has announced an ex-gratia of ₹3 lakh for the families of the deceased students and has assured full medical support for those undergoing treatment. Officials from Meghalaya, including the Inspector of Schools P. Sunn and Sub-Divisional School Education Officer R. Kharsyntiew, have been deputed to Karnataka to assist the families and coordinate with the local administration.

The Meghalaya government is closely monitoring the situation and is in touch with the Karnataka authorities to ensure the well-being of all affected students.
