Rhino poaching bid foiled in Assam

Guwahati, Oct 17: In a coordinated operation, police from Biswanath, Majuli, and Lakhimpur districts foiled a rhino poaching attempt and arrested three persons allegedly involved in the plan.

The joint operation, led by the ASP (Crime), Biswanath; ASP (HQ), Majuli; DySP (HQ), Majuli; IC CDSP, Gohpur; OC, Gohpur PS; and staff from Narayanpur PS, resulted in the arrest of Muhikanta Pegu, resident of Dhenudhara, Gohpur, Biswanat, Manuj Pathari (38), resident of No.1 Mishamora, Garamur, Majul and Kiran Pegu (41), resident of Ukhal Chuk, Garamur, Majuli

Rhino poaching bid foiled in Assam

Based on information provided by the accused, police recovered a .303 rifle and nine 12-bore cartridges from the residence of Debajit Pegu of New Dandi, Gohpur — who is currently absconding.

Police said the arrests and seizure have prevented a planned rhino poaching attempt in the region. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway under the supervision of the ASP (Crime), Biswanath.
