Shillong, Feb 4: Pynshngain Kurbah has made history by becoming the first rower from Meghalaya to win a medal at the National Games.

He secured a bronze medal in the canoeing race of the Men’s Slalom event at the 38th National Games, organized by the Indian Olympic Association in Uttarakhand.

Kurbah recorded an overall timing of 180.859 in Run-1, while in Run-2, he finished at 200.336. His achievement marks Meghalaya’s first-ever medal in rowing at this level and ends the state’s long wait for a podium finish at the National Games. Meghalaya had last won a medal in 2015 but failed to secure any in the 2022 and 2023 editions.

The 38th National Games began on January 28 and will conclude on February 14.

Meghalaya has sent a small contingent of 55 athletes and officials, competing in disciplines such as shooting, athletics, judo, archery, rowing, wushu, swimming, canoeing & kayaking and boxing.
