Over Rs 100 Cr spent by Meghalaya Govt for planting saplings in last 5 years

Shillong, Aug 29: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday informed that the government has spent over Rs 100 crore for planting of saplings in the last five years.

Replying in the Assembly, Sangma said the plantation has been done in approximately 1.19 lakh hectares.

He also informed that there are a total of 99,78,352 number of saplings planted in the state from 2020 till June 2024.

The total number of saplings which have survived out of the above is 73,76,735, he added.

To a supplementary raised by VPP MLA from Mawryngkneng, Heavingstone Kharpran, the CM said 75% is not a bad survival rate but of course the government would desire to ensure plantation of saplings achieved 100% survival.

“We are also making efforts wherever we plant these trees, we bring the community and only they are involved, the success rate is always higher,” he said while adding that the government is also in the process of incentivise such communities to increase the survival rate to 100 percent.

According to him, there is regular monitoring of the saplings on periodical basis.
