Shillong, Oct 4: Leaders of both the Voice of the People Party (VPP) and the National People’s Party (NPP) came together on Friday to express their support for the protest organized by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Sawsymper, Border Area, and Lawbah Area, demanding the creation of a Civil Sub-Division for Mawsynram.
The protest was held at Madan Malki, where leaders from the NPP, including former MLA Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang and MDC Alvinstone Sawkmie, delivered speeches. Rusievan Shangpliang from the VPP also addressed the gathering.
The leaders stressed that Mawsynram Block is well-prepared and should be upgraded to a Civil Sub-Division. MDC Alvinstone noted that political will is crucial, citing that South West Khasi Hills and Eastern West Khasi Hills, despite having only two constituencies have already been granted district and Civil Sub-Division status.
VPP’s Rusievan called on the people to unite and pressure the government to establish the Mawsynram Civil Sub-Division. Himalaya added that the issue is currently under review by a government committee led by the state’s Chief Secretary.
