SHILLONG, MAR 25: Chief Minister and NPP national chief Conrad K Sangma has expressed confidence that his party will open its account in Assam in the upcoming elections, stating that the party’s effort is a long-term commitment to the state.

Asked about the party’s expansion plans in Assam, Sangma said, “Our party of course has always aspired to expand our base in the different parts of the North East. Assam, we have not expanded in the past. We felt there were certain constituencies where we were in touch with some of the leaders for a long time and they have shown interest and based on that we took the decision to field few candidates.”

He emphasized that the party’s effort in Assam is a process and a commitment.

“Let us hope we don’t look at political journey from just an election point of view as for us it is a process, it is a commitment that we are making and we are starting our commitment towards the state of Assam and we will continue to move forward and we hope that we will be able to open an account in this election in Assam,” Sangma told reporters on Wednesday.

On the impact of Daniel Langthasa, a candidate in Assam, Sangma said, “Absolutely, he will make an impact. He is very popular; he is very committed. He is a person with a very great vision for his people and a person who is very humble and at the same time at the ground level and a person who is very connected.”

He added, “We have very high expectations from him not just for his constituency but for the region as a whole and for the party he is a great asset and I am sure he is going to come out successful and I wish him the very best.”
