Shillong, March 21: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said there is no quick fix solution as far as the education sector in the state is concerned.
Sangma said that education is a very complicated sector because of the manner in which in the last many years different systems were created to resolve things in piecemeal manner thereby leading to different categories of schools and different categories of teachers.
“We may not be able to untie the knot in one go. Hence, we started off with a simple process where adhoc and SSA teachers are being taken care of, rationalization of schools will take place and we came with a policy (which seeks the need to set up a) education commission to resolve things in a proper manner. We want the best of the best educationists (to be part of the commission) so that we are able to slowly and steadily (resolve the issues in the education sector),” he said.
He informed that Meghalaya has over 15,000 institutions including schools and colleges compared to its neighbouring state Manipur which has only 4,000 institutions adding that the state has over 12,000 SSA teachers whereas Manipur has only 3,000.
“We will not shy away from the problem,” he assured.
Further, the chief minister informed that the majority of the 1,755 lower primary schools were never repaired for the past 30-40 years. He said over 400 schools were given new buildings.
He said the mining cess collected for education was never used for education in the past adding “But now the MDA government went into the details and said let us spend and build up infrastructures in the schools and we are finally seeing the results.”
