SHILLONG, FEB 13: BJP chief spokesperson M Kharkrang on Friday said the party is waiting for the outcome of the government constituted Judicial Inquiry Commission into a recent explosion incident, which killed over 30 workers, in an illegal coal mine at Mynsngat-Thangsko, East Jaintia Hills district emphasizing that action has been taken by the government.

“The government has ultimately come up and admitted that these things have happened, and I think it is fair for us to wait for the investigation to complete,” Kharkrang told reporters.

Asked, he said, “A case has been registered and arrests have been made. The government has set up a commission of inquiry and let us look at the terms of reference of the commisson of inquiry because it all depends on the terms of reference…”

He highlighted the Centre’s prompt response, stating, “Immediately after the incident, our prime minister and union home minister spoke to our chief minister to get to know the facts.”

The prime minister also sent exgratia payment to the affected people before the state government’s announcement.

On calls for the chief minister to quit the mining portfolio, Kharkrang said, “You cannot have a chief minister quitting for everything that happens… Action has been taken by the government – that is more important than quitting”.
