Shillong, Nov 18: Acting Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Prof. Nirmalendu Saha, has called for collective efforts to strengthen unity within the university amidst recent campus unrest.
The students had staged a hunger strike demanding removal of Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla and other officials over allegations of unethical appointments and other irregularities. Under pressure Shukla had to proceed on leave with the Centre forming an inquiry Committee.
Saha today issued a formal statement to assuage the concerns.
Prof. Saha reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to safeguarding students’ education and well-being, emphasizing that decisions taken during this challenging period prioritize student interests.
Expressing concern over students participating in a hunger strike, he appealed for an end to the protest, citing health risks. Medical teams are actively monitoring the situation, he said.
In a bid to restore normalcy, Prof. Saha engaged with key stakeholders, including NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU), NEHU Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA), and NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA). He also thanked NEHUNSA for resuming essential administrative operations, ensuring scholarships and academic activities continue.
An Inquiry Committee, including representatives from major stakeholders, has been formed to address core concerns, with findings to be reviewed by a Ministry of Education panel. Prof. Saha assured transparency and accountability throughout the process.
Appealing for harmony, Prof. Saha urged all members of the NEHU community to set aside differences and focus on fostering a thriving and united academic environment.
