NEC releases Rs 9.6 Cr for Meghalaya development projects

SHILLONG, FEB 11: The North Eastern Council (NEC) has released a total amount of Rs 5,69,53,000 for various development projects in Meghalaya during January 2026.

The projects include construction of school buildings, support for medical equipment, and infrastructure development.

The funds allocated include for the construction of a school building at RKM School, Nongjngi Nartiang, support for a 1.5T MRI machine at Tura Civil Hospital, construction of R.K Mission School, Sohra, and development of the Williamson Sangma State Museum in Shillong.

Additionally, under NESIDS (Roads), Rs 3.91 crore was released to support key road connectivity projects in the state.

The fund will cover the construction of a road from Shillong city to Umroi Airport, benefiting a population of around 7287 and 10 villages.

The NEC has released a total amount of Rs 81,50,78,461/- across all Northeastern States and regional agencies in January 2026, reflecting its commitment to strengthening developmental initiatives in the North East through infrastructure development, livelihood enhancement, cultural promotion, research, and innovation.

The North Eastern Council (NEC) has disbursed Rs 32,59,10,251 to Central, Regional and Other Agencies, including educational institutions and cultural organizations, in January 2026.

This funding supports various projects across the Northeast, focusing on education, infrastructure, tourism and cultural preservation.

Some key projects include: establishing a resource center for the Koireng Tribe in Manipur to study linguistic art and culture, constructing school buildings, hostels and science labs in Mizoram, Assam and Manipur, building a multipurpose convention center and space exhibition facility at NESAC, developing tourist circuits in Senapati District, Manipur, and promoting tea tourism in Tamenglong District and setting up bamboo tissue culture units and promoting commercial bamboo plantations.

Non-project activities include international and national seminars, cultural festivals and youth exchanges. Key events supported by NEC include the Two Day International Sustainable Summit, Eagle Nest Bird Festival and Sikpui Roui (Hmar Festival).
