Shillong, June 5: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) have alleged gross medical negligence at the 100-Bedded Maternity and Children Hospital, Jowai, following the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child on Wednesday.

The victim, identified as Pynche Bareh, a resident of Jalaphet in East Jaiñtia Hills, was referred to the hospital on June 2, 2025, from her local health dispensary for advanced medical care.

According to the family, doctors instructed Pynche not to consume food on the morning of June 4, as she was scheduled for an operation later that day. However, at around 2:00 PM, when her mother approached the nurses for an update, she was allegedly rudely turned away.

Pynche’s sister, Beautiful Bareh, stated that her sister’s condition began deteriorating in the evening. It was only then that the family was informed the operation would no longer take place.

Tragically, Pynche passed away around 9:30 PM the same evening. The family has refused to accept her body, demanding a clear explanation and accountability from the hospital.

The KSU and JSU have strongly condemned the incident and demanded immediate action against those responsible.

Till filing of this story, the hospital authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations.
