Shillong, Aug 05: Meghalaya Congress legislature party (CLP) leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh on Saturday hailed the order of the Supreme Court, which stayed the conviction of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the ‘Modi surname’ case.
He termed the ruling of the apex court as a ‘victory of India’.
“We are very happy and as a CLP leader of the Congress in Meghalaya I express my deep appreciation to the highest court as we can still approach the court for justice,” Lyngdoh, who is Leader of Opposition, told reporters.
Stating that the truth has prevailed, he said, “Justice has been delivered, democracy has won and the Constitution of the country has been upheld.”
“So this leaves a lot to be desired about the judiciary in Gujarat where even the observation of the highest court in the country has questioned the way this was handled by the judiciary in Gujarat,” he added.
Stating that this is not about one individual, this is about the citizens of the whole country, the CLP leader said, “For the people of India, this has come as something to be happy about as there is still the judiciary to protect the justice of all the citizens of the country.”
He said that the ruling of the Supreme Court has also come at a time when the country has witnessed many institutions being subverted.
“We still have hope in the court as the Supreme Court has stayed the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi. It is not a victory of one man, it is not the victory of one individual, it is the victory of the whole country. It is the victory of India where now we still believe in the saying that India is the biggest democracy in the world. Now, that word has meaning,” he said.
When asked, Lyngdoh said, “Let us look from a real angle. Political angle, people will make their decision but I think the best part is the legal aspect where now we can still have faith in the legal system of the country. That is very important.”
