Aizawl, Oct 9:Â The Election Commission of India(ECI) on Monday announced the Assembly polls date of Mizoram along with five states.
The assembly elections will held on November 7, 2023 in Mizoram. The counting will be held on December 3.
Mizoram has 8.51 lakh voters. Ruling MNF and BJP to contest seperately in the upcoming assembly polls.
The term of the Mizoram assembly ends on December 17. The Mizo National Front is in power in the northeastern state.
The state is currently governed by Mizo National Front under chief minister Zoramthanga. In the 2018 elections, his party MNF had won 26 out of 40 seats, with Congress bagging five and the Bharatiya Janta Party winning just one seat.
The MNF had returned to power after 10 years, ousting the Congress from the loan northeastern state it had been ruling.
In 2018, assembly polls, the MNF bagged a total of 26 seats in the 40-seats assembly house. Eight seats went to independent candidates where, Congress party could manage to win only five seats.
Mizoram CM Lal Thanhawla, who has been heading the state since 2008 and was looking for an unprecedented third term, lost in both the constituencies he was fighting from.
In Champhai South, he was defeated by TJ Lalnuntluanga of the MNF by over 1000 votes and lost Serchhip constituency Lal Thanhawla to ZPM’s Lalduhoma by a slim margin of 410 votes.
