Shillong, April 3: A routine late-night patrol in Mendipathar took a dangerous turn when a speeding vehicle allegedly tried to run over security personnel, leading to an incident that left one passenger injured.

Around 11:30 PM on April 2, a white car (B/R No. AS 01 AM 7750) approached the tri-junction at Mendipathar Bazar at high speed. Witnesses reported that the vehicle, coming from the direction of Mendipathar Police Station (PS), was being driven recklessly. As it neared a CRPF checkpoint in front of Pushpa Cloth Store, personnel had to dodge out of the way to avoid being hit.

When security forces attempted to intercept the vehicle, the driver allegedly accelerated again, attempting to flee. In response, a CRPF officer cocked his AK rifle, aiming to stop the car. However, as the vehicle made a sudden maneuver, the rifle accidentally discharged, striking passenger Neobirth R. Marak (28) in both thighs.

Marak and the driver, Sengrim K. Sangma, were quickly transported to Mendipathar PHC for medical attention. Medical tests confirmed that both men had consumed alcohol. Marak, who sustained gunshot wounds, was referred to a higher medical facility for further treatment. Sangma, who had a blood alcohol concentration of 1.9 g/L, was unharmed but taken into custody for reckless driving and endangering security personnel.

Upon inspecting the vehicle, authorities found a large quantity of alcohol bottles inside. Legal proceedings have been initiated, and the police are investigating further details surrounding the incident.
