Shillong, June 13: Managing Director of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) Sanjay Goyal on Tuesday said the loadshedding will be reduced if the rain situation improves in the days to come.

“If the rain situation improves in the days to come and we are comfortable with water level, definitely we will try to reduce the hours of load shedding, especially the times which are more desirable for having the power…,” Goyal told reporters.

He said of course there have been rains in the recent three-four days and the water level of Umiam has also risen by about 6-7 feet.

“We must keep in mind that the Umiam has reached a level which it has not reached in almost more than a decade. However, the present level is the level which actually is not a very comfortable level and…if it doesn’t rain, (it) is still further as per the desire which we have, then this water will not be very sufficient for 10-11 days of production…,” Goyal added.

Stating that the corporation is arranging additional power from NTPC, the MD said, “We are buying extensively from the open market to maintain the present level of loadshedding.”

He informed that in the last 3-4 days, the corporation has not gone ahead with the load shedding during day time as power was available in the run-off of the river projects like Leshka in view of the good amount of rain.

Asked on the status of the Ganol power project, Goyal said that now the water availability is there and one of the units has already been synchronized with the Grid. “We have kept a target…that we should be in a position to activate all the three units in another one months’ time,” he added.
