SHILLONG, JAN 12: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui has expressed uncertainty over the Meghalaya Transport Corporation’s (MTC) decision to discontinue school bus services from April 1, 2026.
“We have not checked as to why the MTC has stopped. So, until and unless I know the reason, it is very difficult for me to comment on that,” Rymbui said on Monday while responding to a query on MTC’s decision sparking concerns among parents, who are worried about the affordability and reliability of alternative transport options, including STEM buses and private services.
However, the minister highlighted the government’s efforts to address traffic congestion and support students, citing the launch of STEM buses two years ago by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
“I am very grateful to the chief minister as two years back he launched these STEM buses which are quite helpful,” Rymbui said, expressing confidence that the government will increase the availability of these buses.
Rymbui emphasized the government’s commitment to public service and said, “It is the duty of the government, the government is for the public.”
He assured that if STEM buses prove helpful, the government will increase their numbers in the coming months and years.
