SHILLONG, DEC 16: Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira has announced measures to promote plastic-free tourism in the state.

“We have already taken steps at all tourist points, we are keeping bins so that all waste will be collected and disposed of properly,” Shira told reporters on Tuesday.

The bins will be strategically placed to encourage tourists to dispose of waste, particularly plastic, in a responsible manner.

“The bins will be placed in such a way that people won’t need to carry waste for long distances,” Shira added.

The initiative is part of a larger effort to make Meghalaya’s tourist spots plastic-free, and the government is working to implement the plan across the state.

“It is not just the government’s responsibility, but also the duty of the people to enforce it,” Shira emphasized.

The minister stressed the importance of public awareness in maintaining a clean environment, saying, “People need to be aware of how to dispose of waste, especially plastic, to make all places free of plastic.”
