SHILLONG, JAN 10: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday announced strict action against those involved in the death of an ACHIK member in Goalgoan under Rajabala Police Station in West Garo Hills district, assuring that all perpetrators will be brought to justice.

The incident occurred on Friday at around 2 pm, when ACHIK member Dilseng M Sangma was allegedly assaulted by unidentified persons at Goalgoan.

He was rushed to Bhaitbari Community Health Centre and later referred to Tura Civil Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries while being shifted for further treatment.

In a video statement, Sangma said that the incident, which occurred yesterday in the Garo Hills, resulted in the loss of one youth’s life and left another seriously injured.

Condemning the tragic event and expressed condolences to the bereaved family, the chief minister said, “ We condemned this particular incident and at the same time expressed our condolences to the members of the bereaved family.”

“Last night, the West Garo Hills police were very swift and multiple raids were made in different locations. Three people have been arrested and the police are working tirelessly to find the rest of the people who were involved in this heinous crime,” he added.

The Deputy Commissioner has convened a meeting with civil society organizations to form a peace committee and discuss related matters in detail.

The Chief Minister urged citizens to maintain peace and filter unverified social media reports. He emphasized, “At this point in time I would like to urge all citizens of Garo Hills that we must ensure that peace and communal harmony continue to be there in Garo Hills. There will be a lot of news that may be circulated in social media, please filter them carefully.”

He assured the public that the police and administration are actively working to ensure strict action against all involved.

“At this point in time, let me assure the citizens that the police and the administration are on the job and we will ensure that strict action and all people involved in this heinous crime are brought to justice.”

District police chief has informed that police teams carried out raids late Friday night, including at the residence of a quarry owner suspected to be linked to the incident.
However, the quarry owner is currently absconding and is believed to be on the run. Police said efforts are underway to trace and apprehend him at the earliest.
