SHILLONG, FEB 23: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday condemned a racial incident in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar where three women from Arunachal Pradesh were allegedly targeted with slurs, saying it was “unacceptable” and put the country “two steps back”.

“The recent incident… is truly unfortunate and… unacceptable in today’s world… The language used and the body language is… very sad and I must say inexcusable,” Sangma told reporters, stressing that in a “diverse nation like India, we need to respect each other”.

He assured action and support for the victims, offering to take the matter “to the highest level”.

“So, therefore, I appeal to everyone that this is not something that we should encourage, in fact, people should speak out. I hope that the local leaders there in Delhi, as well as the different leaders in terms of the community leaders, also will take serious steps to ensure that such incidents do not happen, and I do encourage that more and more awareness programs in these kind of ways, and specially for the people of North East, we need to also speak out about this, to support each other,” the CM stated.

“People should speak out… I don’t mean to say bad things about others… speaking out only means you support one another… create awareness to people who may not understand… such things should not happen,” he added.
