SHILLONG, FEB 23: Meghalaya Chief Minister said the government will act to safeguard Chinese pangolins after the Leader of Opposition warned that their decline is fueling ant infestations across parts of Garo Hills.

During question hour, Mukul Sangma said ant outbreaks are worsening “due to poaching of these pangolins.”

He noted the wildlife division operates only from Baghmara in South Garo Hills, leaving northern areas without support.

“From North Garo Hills there was no support… the person (concerned) was operating from Williamnagar,” he said, urging a new wildlife division in South West Garo Hills, which also serves as elephant habitat.

“The absence of pangolins is actually creating havoc… my farm is infested with ants,” Sangma added, calling for an awareness campaign and relocation efforts.

“I had spoken to the DFO but they have no manpower.”

In reply, the Chief Minister said the suggestion was noted.

“There is an exhaustive process going on right now to expand administration. Once official sanction is cleared by (necessary) procedure, these offices, beats and ranges will come up.”

He later added, “It is a very important suggestion… I will look into this personally and ensure measures are taken to protect pangolins.”
