Shillong, Nov 18: The Government of Meghalaya, in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (UN-WFP), are working to bolster the Public Distribution System (PDS) and explore innovative approaches to enhance food security across the State.

A meeting was held here today which was presided over by Coming One Ymbon, Minister in charge of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, and Elisabeth Faure, Country Director of UN-WFP.

The discussions focused on addressing existing challenges within the PDS and identifying strategies to improve transparency and accountability across the supply chain. Participants deliberated on leveraging advanced technologies and innovative practices to ensure the efficient delivery of essential commodities to beneficiaries.

A key highlight of the meeting was the development of a collaborative roadmap to align with Meghalaya’s food security objectives. The event also featured an exchange of best practices from other states and insights into successful models implemented globally by the WFP.

The Government of Meghalaya and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in 2021 joined forces to reach over two million people by transforming the Targeted Public Distribution System. The partnership will help WFP and the government to work together towards Sustainable Development Goal 2 – Zero Hunger.

As part of the partnership, WFP and the Department will undertake supply chain optimisation of the entire targeted Public Distribution System in the state and introduce innovative solutions and technologies.

The partnership will help in the piloting of alternate storage mechanisms to reduce losses and improve warehouse management by sharing global best practices on warehouse management and making supply chains efficient and cost-effective. This includes applying smart technologies based on the ‘Internet of Things’.
