GUWAHATI, Dec 22: The Mawjymbuin Cave in Meghalaya has become a focal point of contention between local authorities and Hindu organizations, particularly the Kutumba Surakshya Parishad (KSP) from Assam.

The cave, renowned for its natural Shiva Lingam formation, has been closed to Hindu rituals since August 2024, following a ban imposed by the Mawsynram Dorbar Shnong (village council).

The KSP has set a deadline of December 23, for the Meghalaya government to arrange a meeting with all stakeholders and facilitate a site visit to the Mawjymbuin Cave. Failing this, the organization plans to initiate a road blockade at Byrnihat on December 24.

Borah emphasized that this protest is a constitutional right and a demonstration of their commitment to preserving cultural heritage, as outlined in Article 51(A) of the Indian Constitution.

“This is our final request to the authority concerned to arrange a meeting for us with all the stakeholders and arrange a visit to the site within a stipulated time. We are doing our constitutional duties provided us in Article 51 (A) of the Constitution of India. In a democratic country like India, we have the right to show our demonstration anywhere in the country for any cause. We would like to convey our sincere request to the office of Meghalaya Chief Minister to look into this matter and to do the needful at an early date. Otherwise, we will demonstrate our protest at Byrnihat on December 24. Two organizations- Sanatani Jagrata Prahari and Hindu Surakshya Sena have confirmed their participation in the protest,” the organisation said in a statement.
