Imphal, Feb 9: Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Litan Sareikhong village of Manipur’s Ukhrul district after fresh violence between Tangkhul Naga and Kuki groups led to arson, firing, and heightened tension in the area, officials said on Monday.

According to district authorities, armed militants allegedly set several houses in Litan Sareikhong and nearby Sikibung village late Sunday evening following intense stone-pelting between members of the two tribal communities. Houses belonging to the Tangkhul Naga community were reportedly torched in Litan, while a few Kuki-owned houses were also set on fire in adjoining areas.

The situation escalated after an altercation reportedly left one person injured. The injured has been identified as AS Sterling, son of late AS Paoshim of Sarkaphung village in Ukhrul district. Following the incident, several rounds of gunfire were allegedly exchanged between members of the two communities, triggering panic among residents. No further injuries have been officially confirmed so far.

Citing a “strong apprehension of breach of peace and public tranquillity,” the Ukhrul District Magistrate imposed prohibitory orders in Litan village to prevent further escalation. The administration has invoked Section 122 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which pertains to voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt on grave and sudden provocation and replaces Sections 334 and 335 of the Indian Penal Code.

Additional security forces have been deployed along routes leading to Litan to maintain law and order, restrict the movement of suspicious persons, and prevent fresh disturbances.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as tensions remain high in the region.
