Imphal, July 30: The Manipur government has initiated a drive to capture biometric data of the illegal migrants who are currently being detained in Manipur.
This move comes after considering the seriousness of the issue of ‘illegal immigration’ into India and under the advice of the Central Government.
This exercise is being carried out to ensure that foreign nationals don’t obtain Indian citizenship by any form of unfair means.
A large-scale influx of illegal migrants poses a threat to our national security, and it must be tactfully dealt with.
In a statement issued by the Manipur Home Department, it said the campaign for capturing the biometric data of all illegal immigrants from Myanmar living in the state will be completed by September-end.
The statement further said that “The campaign will continue in all districts until biometric data of all illegal Myanmar immigrants in the state are successfully captured. The same is targeted for completion by September 2023”.
The video of the drive was also shared by Manipur Chief Minister N.Biren Singh on his social media handle.

This comes at a time when Manipur has been hit by ethnic violence since May 3, between the Kuki tribe and the Meiteis.
Earlier, the Centre had asked the Manipur and Mizoram governments to carry out the biometric exercise and also complete it by September, 2023.
