Imphal, Oct 13: Three civilians sustained bullet injuries when an armed militant opened fire in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Thursday.

According to police officials, armed militants began firing from two adjacent villages, Phaimol and Twichin, at around 3 a.m. The three people with critical bullet wounds were taken to Raj Medicity and Little Clinic in Imphal, where they are undergoing treatment.

“They sustained injuries when they were hit by splinters of bombs. One of them sustained injuries when he was hit by a bullet,” sources said.

The state forces rushed to the spot where the armed tribals were taking advantage, atop the hills of Sangram village.

The renewed exchange of fire at the inter-districts—Imphal East and Kangpokpi of Sabungkho Khunou and Sangram village—has happened after about a month.

Phaimol village has around 60 houses, while Twichin has around 70 houses. With most residents living in relief camps, the villages are guarded by village defence guards such as Seikholein.

Over 175 people were killed in ethnic violence that broke out on May 3, 2023, in Manipur.
