Tura, Aug 1: In a tragic incident, a man lost his life after being attacked by elephant in the Garo Hills region.
According to reports, the incident occurred in Kurung village of Pedaldoba, under the Tikrikilla region of the West Garo Hills, late Monday night.
A victim has been identified as 59-year old Milendro Momin, a farmer who had been keeping watch over his paddy field with two other family members when they spotted a herd of wild elephants approaching their field at around 1 O’clock in the night.
They reportedly tried to chase away the elephants with shouts and sounds, which angered the pachyderms, who turned around and gave chase. They caught up with the farmer and trampled him to death.
The place of incident is close to the border with Assam which is frequented by the beasts in their search for food.
This incident comes a day after a 4-year-old child and her mother were attacked by another group of wild elephants on Sunday in the Cherengpara area of Gasuapara in the South Garo Hills. Both escaped with their lives but sustained grievous injuries and had to be brought to Tura for medical treatment. In their case too, despite warnings not to proceed through the road where elephants had been spotted, they discarded the warnings.
